🧭 Strategic Foundations
Identifying the obstacles. Creating the plan.
At Console Mission, our strategies are grounded in lived experiences, community insights, and global realities. This page highlights the foundational research, challenges, and strategic responses that define our mission, vision, and Theory of Change. We believe that recognizing barriers—ranging from global perceptions of Nepal to local systemic inequities—is essential to creating resilient, inclusive, and transformative solutions.
That’s a bold and important question, दिलासा—and one that speaks directly to your mission of transforming perception and experience. Nepal is rich in beauty, culture, and resilience, but there are real barriers that discourage some international visitors.
🚧 Key Challenges That Discourage Tourists from Visiting Nepal
1. Poor Infrastructure
- Roads: Many rural and trekking routes are underdeveloped, making travel slow and uncomfortable.
- Airports: Tribhuvan International Airport is often congested, with long immigration lines and limited amenities.
- Connectivity: Lack of direct transport between major tourist hubs like Pokhara, Chitwan, and Lumbini.
2. Safety Concerns
- Aviation Risks: Nepal has experienced several tragic air crashes, including the Pokhara disaster in 2023, which raised global concerns about flight safety.
- Natural Disasters: Earthquakes, landslides, and unpredictable weather can disrupt travel plans.
3. Limited Amenities
- Basic Facilities: Tourists often report difficulty finding clean toilets, reliable internet, and comfortable lodging in remote areas.
- Medical Access: Emergency healthcare is limited outside Kathmandu and Pokhara.
4. Perception of Political Instability
- Frequent changes in government and strikes (bandhs) can create uncertainty for travelers, even if they don’t directly affect tourists.
5. Lack of Diversified Experiences
- Nepal is often marketed only for trekking and mountains. Visitors who aren’t adventure seekers may feel there’s “not much else to do”.
- Cultural tourism, wellness retreats, and community-based experiences are under-promoted.
6. Environmental Concerns
- Over-tourism in places like Everest Base Camp has led to waste accumulation and ecological strain.
- Air pollution in Kathmandu can be a deterrent for sensitive travelers.
