The similarities between cottage industries and grassroots community-based NGOs (GCB-NGOs)

The main idea is to see the GCB-NGOs to be a possible agent for change.

Definition: Cottage industries and GCB-NGOs share similarities in their (1.) localized focus, (2.) community-driven initiatives, and (3.) their role in empowering local populations by addressing specific needs and fostering economic and social development.

Consequently, Console Mission Nepal (CoMiNp), building upon its past methodologies and enhancing its operational approaches, has seen a gradual but noticeable impact over the last five years, including the period of the pandemic starting from 2018. The community, encompassing children, parents, local authorities, and school teachers, has been responsive to CoMiNp’s initiatives. These initiatives primarily support girls in pursuing their formal education, serving as a preventive measure against unforeseen calamities such as human trafficking.

Through an initiative known as Our Study Place, CoMiNp has had the opportunity to contribute to a larger project within the rural community. (2022, Bagmati Rural Municipality)
Events such as International Women’s Day are not expensive and, with minimal expenses, help participants understand their significance and look to the future. (2019, CoMiNp office roof)
Sumitra, who is 16 years old and was born in December 2008, has completed her schooling and is now looking into higher education opportunities. With the assistance of a volunteer, CoMiNp has applied for a scholarship on her behalf. Since she lives in an urban area, her educational expenses are beyond her parents’ financial capabilities. However, CoMiNp will continue to guide her like local parents. She also engages in peer group learning sessions, which are organized by a volunteer from the management team. These sessions take place in a space provided by a local woman who supports education both during and after school hours. Presently, CoMiNp has rented a room where around 25 children meet daily after school to focus on their academic work.
