This news and there are several news gives hints that the public school must think, plan and act quickly.

Why can’t school manage to have a hostel partnering with parents. Partnering means, at least they as a parents provide monthly fee based on their social status. So that school could manage a place for the student. किन विद्यालयले अभिभावकसँग साझेदारीमा सही व्यवस्थापन गर्न सक्दैनन् ? साझेदारीको अर्थ, कम्तिमा अभिभावकको रूपमा उनीहरूले आफ्नो सामाजिक स्थितिको आधारमा मासिक शुल्क प्रदान गर्छन्। जसले गर्दा विद्यालयले विद्यार्थीका लागि ठाउँ व्यवस्थापन गर्न सकोस् ।

स्याङ्जाको गल्याङ नगरपालिका–९, कालीगण्डकी नजिकै रहेको माझी बस्तीका बालबालिका विद्यालय जाँदैनन् । विद्यालय जान उनीहरूलाई अभिभावकले प्रेरित पनि गर्दैनन् । यसको एउटै कारण हो घर नजिकै विद्यालय नहुनु ।

Children of Majhi or Fisherman community near Kaligandaki, Galyang Municipality-9, Syangja do not go to school. Parents do not encourage them to go to school. The only reason for this is that there is no school near the house.

छिमेकी गाउँका बालबालिका विद्यालय गइरहँदा यो गाउँका बालबालिकाका हरेक दिन मनोरञ्जन र खेलमा रमाएर बित्ने गरेको छ । विद्यालयको मुख देख्न नपाउनुमा गाउँमा विद्यालय नहुनु हो । उनीहरूलाई पढ्नका लागि कालीगण्डकी नदी तरेर अर्को प्रदेशमा जानुपर्ने बाध्यता छ । यही बाध्यताका कारण अभिभावक आफ्ना बालबालिकालाई पढ्न पठाउँदैनन् । 

While the children of neighboring villages go to school, the children of this village spend their days enjoying entertainment and games. If you can’t see the face of the school, there is no school in the village. They have to cross the Kaligandaki river to go to another province to study. Because of this compulsion, parents do not send their children to study.

स्थानीय श्यामबहादुर माझीले भन्नुभयो, “बस्ती नजिक स्कुल छैन । टाढाको स्कुल पठाउन सकिएन ।” उहाँले गाउँका बालबालिकालाई पढ्नु पर्छ भन्ने सामान्य जानकारी पनि छैन । माझी बस्तीमा १७ घरपरिवार छन् । उनीहरूका १९ जना बालबालिका विद्यालयको पहुँचबाट टाढा छन् । केही बालबालिका भने पढ्नका लागि छिमेकी जिल्ला पाल्पा पुग्ने गरेको स्थानीयको भनाइ छ । पढ्न गएकाहरू पनि तह अनुसारको पढ्ने उमेर नाघेका छन् ।  

Local Shyam Bahadur Majhi said, “There is no school near the settlement. Couldn’t send him to a distant school.” It is not even common knowledge that he should read to the children of the village. There are 17 households in Majhi Basti. 19 of their children are out of reach of school. Locals say that some children go to neighboring district Palpa to study. Even those who went to study have exceeded the reading age according to the level.

माझी समुदायका अधिकांश मानिस पढ्न र लेख्न जान्दैनन् । स्थानीय दिलकुमारी माझीले गाउँमा विद्यालय नभएका कारण आफूहरू शिक्षाबाट वञ्चित हुनुपरेको गुनासो गर्नुभयो । उहाँले विद्यालय नभएका कारण आफूहरू अन्य गाउँको तुलनामा हरेक हिसाबले पछिपरेको बताउनुभयो । उहाँले छोराछोरीलाई विद्यालय पठाउन सहज हुने खालको सचेतना आफ्नो बस्तीमा आवश्यक रहेको बताउँदै भन्नुभयो, “छोराछोरीलाई पाल्पा पठाउन कुनै अप्ठ्यारो थिएन तर यहाँको संस्कार नै यस्तै बनेको छ । छोराछोरी पढाउन एकल प्रयासले हुने अवस्था नै छैन ।” 

Most of the people of the Majhi community do not know how to read and write. Local Dilkumari Majhi complained that they were deprived of education because there was no school in the village. He said that because there is no school, they are behind in every way compared to other villages. He said that there is a need for awareness in his settlement to make it easy for children to go to school and said, “There was no difficulty in sending children to nursery school, but the culture here has become like this.” It is not a situation to educate children with a single effort.

गल्याङ नगरपालिकाले भने माझी समुदायका बालबालिकालाई पढ्ने व्यवस्था गरिएको दाबी गरेको छ । नगरपालिकाका वडा नं. ९ का अध्यक्ष नामदेव खनालले माझी बस्तीबाट आधा घण्टाको दुरीमा विद्यालय रहे पनि विद्यार्थी आफैँ अनुपस्थित रहेको दाबी गर्दै भन्नुभयो, “बालबालिकालाई शिक्षामा अगाडि ल्याउन र विद्यालय जाने वातावरण बनाउन पहल जारी छ ।” 

Galyang Municipality has claimed that provision has been made for the children of the Majhi community to study. Municipal Ward No. Namdev Khanal, the president of 9, claimed that although the school is half an hour away from Majhi Basti, the students themselves are absent and said, “Initiatives are ongoing to bring children forward in education and create an environment for going to school.”

शिक्षा विकास तथा समन्वय एकाइ स्याङ्जाका प्रमुख विश्वराज आचार्यले धेरै विद्यार्थी विद्यालय नजाने आफूहरूलाई जानकारी नरहेको भन्दै यसबारेमा आफूले बुझ्ने र समस्या भएको भए समाधानका लागि पहल गर्ने बताउनुभयो । पठित धेरै भएको जिल्लाका रूपमा स्याङ्जालाई लिइन्छ । स्याङ्जालाई २०७१ सालमा पूर्ण साक्षर जिल्ला घोषणा गरिएको थियो । जिल्लाका ८१.७ प्रतिशत नागरिक साक्षर रहेको २०७८ सालको राष्ट्रिय जनगणनाले देखाएको छ । 

Bishwaraj Acharya, Head of Education Development and Coordination Unit Syangja, said that they do not know that many students do not go to school and said that they understand this and if there is a problem, they will take steps to solve it. Syangja is considered as the most literate district. Syangja was declared fully literate district in 2071. The national census of 2078 has shown that 81.7 percent of the citizens of the district are literate.

Community work or development is vast.

In 2020, time of pandemic, Co. Mi. did not realise that it will interact with the unexpected incident and that later on have to handle it well. And did not imagine that its #rented flat would turn into a place for the girls from the rural area to stay and continue their studies. Now they have completed their studies and they are on their own, just started professional life.

It was actually about a teenage girl who cried out for help and for justice. It was heard, one of the past Health & Management trainees from her village shared about her situation. Co. Mi. informed a media who reached there and after finding the fact and intervening the barriers, she got justice. But after that she could not stay in her village. She (Anita) got place at Co. Mi. along with other 4 girls, she also brought her younger sister because her father had another husband and family. And since her mother was no more with them, she had to bring her younger sister who is found a hostel by Co. Mi. and though Co. Mi. sent her to village and helped to join school, she could not continue there. Now she is working in one house living there. Co. Mi. was asked about this project that was named Self Managed Home (SMH). It just came based on the very need. Yes, Co. Mi. had a scholarship project for school’s children. Later after completing 10, that was the main problem that children dropout. Because they know what will happen after completing 10. The cost to migrate in city, rent and all other expenses, not affordable. Co. Mi. have see those whose parents did help could not continue regular support and when the final examination came they had to return back because their educational institute asked to pay to appear for the examination. Parents never thought that time would come that they had to manage fund, regularly for their children, so they hardly saved. Many did not have a bank account. Moreover, not only the additional financial burden but actually that is connected with the income generation.

The main occupation is agriculture and farming. To harvest more and quickly, people have learned to use chemical fertilisers but that is decreasing the value, the quality of the food. Because that is cause of unhealthy food consumption and not healthy. Therefore, harvesting naturally, the food is today’s priority. When their primary occupation will boost but sustainable, soil condition, not affected by chemicals. All that is linked with children’s future too. Therefore when Co. Mi. is focusing conservation or agricultures or managing food that is wasted during harvesting or not able to transport in right place, it may seem out of direction. But it is not. Really community work or development is vast and many aspects are linked with each other that just like unimagined Self Managed Home for girls, these are some and many new unimagined and unknown areas that Co. Mi. should cover in future.

Young, one among 3 children, son, living in a government’s facility, is used to tobacco and alcoholic beverages. He often regrets, close to the school where his father used to be the boss, running a retail shop and looking for opportunities to earn. He has his own family but is supported by his parents. He also had a chemist’s shop, selling medicine and providing jobs opportunities. But he became used to drugs that he could not run it well. His wife helped to stop it by managing to have it at home rather than outside. But that did not help. He also had several conflicts that he had to return to his parents.

Based on this case, it is teenage, egos and challenges that direct someone in future career path. Living in a government’s facility this person involved in discriminating against others, little age below his age, living in rent. Mainly, there was a public tap, early morning, locals to collect water, he was not necessary to intervene but he was supporting someone else. And even, using his father’s power, insisting the water controller, the government employee to stop water, interfering. When some young children were speaking up, he even got violent, collecting a few other guys, and physically violent.

In the same area, one of the founder members used to live in their own house. Those living in rent, in need, used to get help. That was something related to the son of someone important person and neighbour. When one person, in the teenage is discriminating and the other is defending, obviously 2 different ways of living life. Certainly, that person was irregular to school, bunking, going to watch movies, instead of going to school. In that situation, the person defending those suffering of not getting collect water, was regular to school. That was the time that person left private school and joined public school. “That was the time, controversy studying at public school, private schools or calling boarding schools were the quality place for education compared to the public school”. But when a student flunks, there is a challenge to get promoted and the student needs to continue from starting from the same grade. And it will be the junior. It is a shameful situation. Therefore, those studying at private or boarding school select public school and get opportunity to continue in the grade. That helps to maintain 1 year loss. However, in upper grade in 8, 9 and 10, the course is difficult and similar. Because both students either from boarding or public have to appear in national examination that the question paper is the same. Just the difference is boarding students’ writes in English and those from public school answers in Nepali except English subject paper. In the case of the son of the principal, could not face even after joining public school. Because he missed basic parts of learning instead his mind was full of the unnecessary and made pictures that he saw in movie hall bunking classes. Besides, he was also involved in selling tickets in high price that he was taught by some other person who was a school dropouts. They used to wait for the time when a new movie used to be released. For a while when they earned, they were happy. The trend went further and he did earn but that did not last long. Life become a compromise that to fulfil it, he is giving priority to his children’s education. Education is important, it gives opportunities and ways to move ahead even facing challenges. It is most important that children also get opportunity to learn and experience life skills lessons on time. To make is sure, Co. Mi. is focusing that its initiation to start a learning place in community will have such opportunities that children gets opportunities to strengthen their thinking power. And capable to focus on the need and priority.

A mother was known during the pandemic when Console Mission reached her village where she recently came. She was living in a house built by her brother during an earthquake made of zinc sheet. The reason that she is back to her parental house was because her husband did not care for her and 3 children.

Manamaya’s children are supported managing educational materials and continued going to school. And she also had handloom training. To start business, a handloom machine was also provided. She was consulted to have legal proof of separation from her husband and get based on legal provisions. She had a daughter and 2 sons whose future must be secure. Because later the land where she is living that belongs to her brother will need to be purchased so that she can continue living. Along with 3 children, she is aged below 35.

By helping her children, scholarship and skill training with business starting kits, Console Mission have done sufficient. However, she will need legal and psychosocial support.

Last Friday, the second week of October 2023, we had the opportunity to hold fast together in a group.

The purpose of fasting was to understand our own attitude, develop it or sustain it. If it is not effective, then find the way to control it and transform it into an acceptable attitude and humble Psalm 35:13 ourselves. Beside that we try to learned about the present work of an INGO called World Vision because our motive was to pray for their service the need required to serve. In this way the young staff members also got opportunity to learn the work of INGOs. Moreover when we read from Bible, we found that there were 2 cultures there followed by the people. The first is their own, may be Hebrew, Jews or the culture of that part where Jesus was born. Jesus that we accept as a leader that we need to learn as a part of a mission to stand for the social causes. And the second is the culture that Jesus was living and maybe he wants us to follow. This was a point of reflection.

As a part of the fasting, we learned from visiting the website of World Vision. Its history and latest updates. We learned it was started after the founder name Bob Pierce giving the last $5 in his pocket to help care for an abandoned Chinese girl in 1947, to then-CEO Stan Mooneyham purchasing a large ship in 1979 to rescue refugee families stranded at sea in Vietnam, World Vision has gone where others would not. Even in the places where it is hardest to be a child, God is there—and we should be there too. So, our mission continues. (https://www.wvi.org/our-history). Besides this, the latest update helps to understand how World Vision is helping Ukrainians, affected by war to shelter in Georgia. And when we checked their prayer needs, they are focusing prayer for the action against hunger.

We did pray for the upcoming event that went well. But it was a preparation for the coming days to organize a rally, set a campaign and also work beyond. To do this ‘we’ must work together.

By reading the story and prayer focus, Console Mission developed an idea that we must be outgoing and do something for the world around us. We need to help youngsters to have an opportunity to develop their self-confidence by participating in a group gathering where we talk on topics relevant and issues that they might be facing. In this way, they get ways to come along and open their heart as they might be facing several problems and going through issues. An idea to start a fellowship but not a religious one was shared that will be written and shared. And our management volunteer did so.

If, by reading the Bible, we are following others culture and adopting it then that will distract. For example, eating or killing cows is not Nepali culture.  But that may be acceptable in other parts of the world. And even Nepali people must not give a name to Christian by saying Christianity is a cow eating religion. Maybe people stopped saying that. However, they must not say that. Matthew 9:15

In the social work sector, during training or interactive events, the event management team or NGOs strive to understand the reasons behind advocating and taking a stand against child marriage.

In October 2022, a representative from Console Mission attended an event hosted by a coalition of NGOs dedicated to eradicating child marriage in Nepal. During an introductory session, the director divided the attendees, asking those married before the age of 18 or related to someone who was to move to the right side, and all others to the left. The exercise aimed to identify victims of child marriage. Surprisingly, more than half belonged to neither category, and while some knew of such cases, no direct victims were present. Locating a victim is feasible, yet it requires public outcry. Nonetheless, questioning the effectiveness or deeming efforts to halt child marriage as futile is not constructive.

Our research indicates that three out of five individuals marry early and either do not complete their education or stop after grade 10. It is common to find that many parents and their ancestors also married at a young age.

Discussing marriage with teenagers is not a common practice now. However, our colleague, a male, was encouraged by his grandfather at the age of 12 to find a wife. His grandparents had married at the same age without understanding what marriage entailed. Another case involves a woman employed at the Chief District Office in the western part of the country, who was abandoned by her husband after giving birth to a daughter. She was a teenager in love. Similarly, her daughter and her niece also married as teenagers and did not finish their schooling.

Many of our parents, and their parents before them, married before the age of 18, some even before 16, and often had children within a year of marriage. This practice continues today. Last June and July, three 14-year-old girls associated with Console Mission were married. Today, Console Mission learned that one girl, Sumitra, and her husband will soon have a homecoming celebration. They were friends, and after one married, the other two followed. This occurred as Console Mission was transitioning the Our Study Place project to the community. Over the past five years, since 2018, there had been a decline in such cases. The older sisters of these girls, who were students and volunteers at OSP, completed school and were expected to take on their roles. One who had married earlier began her role but then visited Console Mission’s office, possibly hoping to find a place at the Self Managed Home. It wasn’t easy for her to ask, and she may not have shared her situation, especially with her older sister who was planning to attend college after completing her SEE.

Indeed, it’s not just in the past; we are still surrounded by victims.

While marriage might be a means for many teenage girls to support their lives, they often end up as victims. They are expected to give birth, manage household chores, tend to livestock, and work the land to cultivate crops such as maize and green vegetables.ables.

A girl who excelled in the SEE was advised to enroll in a technical course beneficial for her village, known for its milk production from livestock such as buffalo, cows, and goats. However, she married. The Console Mission learned from her husband’s uncle that she was expected to manage the household, livestock, fields, and bear children. Yet, the girl insisted her husband valued education and would support her college attendance.

Before Console Mission initiated Our Study Place, an educational program for children, underage marriages were rampant from 2015 to 2017, with girls under 15 marrying and conceiving.

Console Mission encountered a grade 9 scholarship recipient who married. She claimed she quit school to care for her ill father, but soon after, she fled. Her mother, speaking to Console Mission fearfully, revealed her daughter could have married a year earlier if not for the scholarship. Despite counseling from Console Mission on family planning and sexual health, the young girl faced life-threatening complications during childbirth and was rushed to the hospital.

Another case involved a boy whose mother died during his birth. He never met her and grew up with two older sisters. His father had longed for a son, possibly pushing the mother beyond her physical limits. She married young, had two children, and succumbed to the strain. Teenage years should be for growth and development, but early entry into the reproductive cycle, contrary to medical advice, can lead to both social and physical ailments.

The story unfolds with a boy whose mother passed away during his birth. He never had the opportunity to meet her. He grew up with two older sisters, and a father who longed for a son. Perhaps his mother was physically unable to bear more children. She married young, had two children during her teenage years—a time when individuals should focus on their personal development. Medical science sets guidelines for entering the reproductive cycle, aimed at improving global health. Ignoring these guidelines leads to social and physical disorders that persist over time.

Breaking this cycle is imperative. Without collective support, it is not feasible. Thus, we invite you to join us. Leaving no one behind is crucial, or else our world faces jeopardy. The pandemic has shown us that the suffering of one person, family, or community can have a lasting negative impact worldwide.

Console Mission’s initiative highlights the importance of advocacy for children’s needs and rights. While parents and adults may know the law, the absence of enforcement leads to the continuation of teenage marriages as cultural norms, perpetuating these practices.

He is not only idle who does nothing, but he is idle who might be better employed.

Before I provide information about the rally aimed at raising public awareness of human trafficking, I would like to explain why I chose the aforementioned quote:

“Socrates is widely recognized as a clever individual. It is generally accepted that a person who does nothing is idle, especially one who performs tasks in a repetitive or unchanging manner. This notion suggests that if we desire change, it is crucial to adopt a different approach or alter our method of work.”

Since 2017, Console Mission has taken to the streets with the aim of raising public awareness. Their goal is to reach the entire country because the rally, an event held in a well-known global city, is not only for Nepal or the Nepalese but also offers crucial support for other countries where human trafficking takes on various horrific forms. While sex is natural, the trafficking of individuals for body parts like skin is an appalling reality that stands in stark contrast to abduction for sexual exploitation.

The team has initiated the potential road traffic diversion. Approximately 300 participants need to be informed about this, as it will be a new experience for many. The activity is expected to last around one and a half hours. Participants will receive materials designed to facilitate ongoing connection and collaboration after the rally. A nine-member team, including seven staff and two managers, will oversee the event. To manage resources, fundraising efforts have begun, targeting individuals and organizations such as NGOs, political parties, banks, and faith-based groups. The event is anticipated to receive full support from the authorities, as past rallies have proven to be encouraging for them. For instance, a rally on September 5, 2022, in Kathmandu district saw participation from various NGOs addressing human trafficking. The upcoming rally will take place in Lalitpur district, which, along with Kathmandu and Bhaktapur, forms the Kathmandu Valley.

Materials such as placards will carry potent messages urging authorities to enforce existing laws against human trafficking, with a particular focus on children entitled to freedom and education.

An elder mother, devastated by earthquake, 2015, Nepal, made a temporary house in her land where she grew vegetables and grains. In the south part of Lalitpur district of Nepal all human’s made infrastructures were fallen down and damaged. Still, they are living a life in confusions. People rebuilt their house in same place or close to the previous one, but they were not got migrated.

What is World Humanitarian Day?

“A day that binds human together” – Console Mission. To think about human casualties happening and possible threats. To help those in need.

Background

On 19 August 2003, a bomb attack on the Canal Hotel in Baghdad, Iraq, killed 22 humanitarian aid workers, including the UN Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Iraq, Sergio Vieira de Mello. Five years later, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution designating 19 August as World Humanitarian Day (WHD).

Each year, WHD focuses on a theme, bringing together partners from across the humanitarian system to advocate for the survival, well-being and dignity of people affected by crises, and for the safety and security of aid workers.

What is the purpose of World Humanitarian Day?

World Humanitarian Day is a reminder of the selflessness and dedication of the people who have paid the ultimate price. 

Why is it celebrated?

Based on background, it was in the memory of those ‘humanitarian workers’ who were killed.

Why it concerns Console Mission (CM)?

1. Before 2015, earthquake in April, CM coordinated to rescue mainly women and girls from the street of Kathmandu valley. And found place for them where suitable.
2. During flood some faith-based leader from one plain area of the country requested for relief and mosquito nets were provided.

What is the plan? Or, looking for the future?

1. There are wars going on and many wars have been within the countries. Like the war between Ukraine and Russia is the ward between the country. And the war between the military junta and various ethnic rebel groups – The Burma Civil War. In one part of India, from April the violence between the majority Meitei and Kuki communities. And borders conflicts are always in tense situation, always one or more soldier casualty is in news. Raising Voice by participating the activities against and based on the availability of the resources and need, organise effective public events.
2. Since Flood is every year, CM is focusing on study result solution that will not affect lives. And since prone to Earthquake CM must focus in this area. CM have reached to the most affected and epicenters, people and community recognizes the concern. It is better to have organize at least monthly session. Starting from the closest rural village community.

Conclusions

It is possible that similar incident could happen – when we help someone that may be disliked or offensive to someone other. Therefore, the day or the celebration helps to remember and be alert, plan and act.

It was 2016 when Console Mission began seeing the needs of girls and boys in rural districts after the earthquake. From the start, health was our first priority — training on hygiene, sanitation, nutrition, and counseling. But as we worked with teenagers, we realized that Body Confidence and Self‑Protection Rights (BCSPR) were essential.

Children must know. NGOs were focusing awareness and training for teenage girls, but what about boys? If boys don’t learn, they are left behind. When males lack knowledge about their bodies, relationships, and protection rights, how can they support their spouse, sister, or mother? Girls often say, “My husband doesn’t understand me.” That gap in understanding is why BCSPR must include boys as well as girls.

One story from 2016 illustrates this: a girl in grade 8 stopped school and married at age 13. She had been selected for a scholarship, but cultural tradition — marriage after menstruation — pulled her out of education. Following her journey revealed the risks of early marriage, miscarriage, and unsafe relationships. Console Mission realized that training sessions at school were not enough. BCSPR must go deeper, addressing confidence, safeguarding, and resilience.

In villages like Bhattedanda and Nallu, we saw teenage mothers facing abandonment, unsafe migration, and trafficking risks. These realities showed us that BCSPR is not just about health — it is about dignity, resilience, and education continuity.
