Daily Gatherings that Built Unity and Boosted School Attendance

Teachers visiting children at Our Study Place during Covid-19; students gathered together instead of at individual home

During Covid-19, schools across Nepal were closed for a long time. To keep learning alive, the Education Department asked teachers to visit students at their homes.

When teachers came to Nayagaon, they were surprised to find all the children already gathered together at Our Study Place, Console Mission’s community learning centre. Started as a four-month test project in July 2018, it grew into a meaningful initiative. The children, dressed in school uniforms, were excited but also disciplined—meeting daily, holding assemblies before class, and creating a structured rhythm in the village.

Around 30 students from Nayagaon, and sometimes children from nearby villages, joined in. Their daily presence built unity and helped protect vulnerable groups—children, women, and older people—from isolation. Though some tried to disrupt the gatherings, the habit of coming together improved school attendance and academic progress, as teachers later confirmed.

Console Mission became known for this quiet transformation, even without wide publicity. With Nepal’s public school network reaching across the country, Console Mission hopes to extend this model more widely, building resilience and safeguarding communities through education.

🌍 Understanding Each Other, Sustaining Our Planet

Students climbing hillside to reach school, symbolizing resilience and sustainable future.

Console Mission

🌍 World Culture Day – May 21st

Community members working together on terraced farmland in a hilly area, cultivating soil side by side to support local agriculture and cooperation.

Theme 2026: “Bridging Cultures, Building Peace”

On this World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development, Console Mission celebrates the richness of ethnic cultures — from traditional foods to unique living styles — as pathways to tourism growth and sustainable local resources.

Culture is more than heritage; it is dialogue, identity, and opportunity. By showcasing diversity, we strengthen community pride, attract visitors, and empower local initiatives.

But celebration also calls for reflection.

  • Board Members: How can we ensure our governance reflects the diversity we celebrate?
  • Advisers: Are we challenging ourselves enough to align cultural promotion with sustainable development?
  • Founders: What legacy of cultural stewardship do we want to leave for future generations?
  • Friends and Partners: How can you, at a personal or organizational level, deepen your engagement with cultural diversity beyond symbolic gestures?

Together, let’s honor our cultural treasures and share them with the world — building peace through diversity and development.

👉 Call to Action:

Wellness, Environment, and SDGs: Reflections on Slum Realities

From urgent health needs to sustainable futures, prevention must lead the way.

When Console Mission hears about a problem, we first seek to understand it clearly and then share outcomes with the team. Members provide suggestions based on facts, often emphasizing the need for funding. Yet when issues are urgent, we act even without funds.

For example, people facing health concerns—especially stigmatized diseases like HIV/AIDS or skin conditions linked to NTDs/Leprosy—often hesitate to seek care. They may know where to get tested but remain uncertain about costs, and high expenses can deter them. Console Mission guides them to appropriate services, ensuring preventive care is not ignored.

In 2018, residents in slum areas suffered from diseases caused by contaminated, stagnant river water. Console Mission learned of this through a faith‑based contact and mobilized three volunteers—two college girls and one boy on a gap year—to reach nearly 400 families from across Nepal. While we did not engage directly with the slum committee, we supported women and girls eager to join our Skill and Business Development Training, providing references to strengthen their opportunities.

“Addressing pollution, ensuring clean water, and safeguarding families are not just local needs—they are global commitments under SDG 3, SDG 6, and SDG 11.”

As relationships grew, our founders, board members, and advisers visited regularly. Visible improvements followed: better road management, paved walkways, and government housing for families without land or property. Initially, we did not understand why the faith‑based leader brought us there, but later realized that the demolition of slum houses under the Prime Minister’s leadership was part of a legal process. Not all residents were homeless—only those without land or housing were relocated, and financially constrained families received support.

Over time, this became a business for two groups: genuine citizens who received government‑provided assets, and those who later purchased those assets, consuming public property. Yet the deeper concern extends beyond demolishing houses. It is about community wellness, environmental health, and the urgent need for river water to flow smoothly. Addressing pollution, ensuring clean water, and safeguarding vulnerable families directly align with the Sustainable Development Goals—particularly SDG 3 (Good Health and Well‑Being), SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), and SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities).

Jagaran Basti, situated between Sanepa in Lalitpur Metropolitan City and Balkhu in Kathmandu Metropolitan City, remains a reminder that wellness and sustainability must guide development.

Dignity Across Generations: From Classrooms to Care Homes

In Nepal, two pressing issues reveal how vulnerable groups are denied dignity and protection: child marriage and old age abandonment. At first glance, they seem unrelated. But both are deeply connected — and both are rooted in the same gaps in education, social norms, and weak government mechanisms.

👧 Child Marriage: Silence and Stigma

In rural areas, girls often lack access to quality education that builds self-confidence, self-discipline, and awareness of rights. Without these foundations, they are more vulnerable to family and community pressure to marry early. Stigma prevents them from speaking out, and weak enforcement of laws leaves them unprotected.

👵 Old Age Abandonment: Silence and Stigma Again

At the other end of life, even educated elders who once held respected jobs are abandoned or cheated by their own families. Despite their knowledge, stigma and shame prevent them from reaching out to legal bodies, NGOs, or municipalities. Nepal lacks a dedicated government mechanism to protect older persons, leaving NGOs to run helplines and counseling projects with limited resources.

📚 The Missing Link: Quality Education

The cycle begins with education. In rural Nepal, schools often fail to provide activities that build self-discipline, confidence, and civic awareness. Without these skills, young girls cannot resist harmful practices, and elders cannot overcome stigma to seek help. Both generations suffer because education did not prepare them to assert their rights.

⚖️ Shared Lessons

  • Stigma silences victims — whether girls forced into marriage or elders abandoned by families.
  • Weak mechanisms fail both groups — laws against child marriage and policies for elders exist but are poorly enforced.
  • Education is the foundation — without confidence and rights awareness, vulnerability persists across the life cycle.

✅ Console Mission’s Call

Human rights must be protected from childhood to old age.

  • Invest in quality education that builds confidence and rights awareness.
  • Establish a government-supported mechanism for elderly protection.
  • Strengthen enforcement of child marriage laws.
  • Support NGOs with resources to sustain helplines and counseling.

👉 Protecting dignity across generations means breaking the cycle of silence and stigma. From classrooms to care homes, Nepal must ensure that every person lives with dignity, autonomy, and security.

She Belongs: A Daughter’s Right to Be Family

Every child deserves the right to belong. In Nepal, too many daughters are denied education and dignity because of systemic barriers. Console Mission is working to break those walls—helping girls reclaim their place in family and society through confidence, advocacy, and opportunity.

This March, GlobalGiving’s Little by Little Campaign makes your impact even greater. From March 23–27, 2026, every donation up to $50 will be matched at 50%. That means your gift goes further in empowering girls, protecting children, uplifting the elderly, and strengthening youth voices.

Your support makes this possible. Together, we can ensure that daughters are not left behind but are celebrated as agents of renewal.

👉 Donate today and watch your generosity grow little by little.

🌸 Sweat, Strength, and Self-Reliance: When Little Becomes Much

🌱 Little x Little: Every Gift Multiplied into Belonging

On International Women’s Day 2026, Console Mission celebrates women whose courage transforms hardship into hope.

Take the story of Shreemaya Tamang, a 72-year-old from South Lalitpur. While many elderly women are expected to rest at home, she works daily as a bus assistant—calling out to passengers, collecting fares, and ensuring safe journeys. Her sweat is not a burden; it is her dignity. Her resilience is a reminder that self-reliance is possible at any age.

Her story mirrors the heartbeat of our mission: small acts multiplied into lasting impact.

🌍 Little x Little, Belonging Multiplied

Through GlobalGiving’s Little x Little campaign, every donation you make is amplified. A small gift becomes a scholarship. A modest contribution becomes a safe classroom. A single act of generosity becomes dignity restored.

This aligns with our project She Belongs: A Daughter’s Right to Be Family. Just as every daughter deserves to belong to her family, every learner deserves to belong to opportunity. Your gift—no matter how small—multiplies into belonging, safety, and hope.

💪 Why It Matters

  • Shreemaya’s sweat → Symbol of resilience and independence.
  • Your donation → Multiplied through Little x Little, turning into scholarships and safe spaces.
  • Our project → Ensures children and daughters are not left behind, but belong to family, community, and education.

✨ Call to Action

This International Women’s Day, Console Mission invites you to give. Because when you give, it will be multiplied—into belonging, dignity, and futures restored.

Together, we can transform sweat into strength, and little into much.
